What Is This Lanai Thing That Floridians Talk About?

One of the first questions potential Florida Plungers ask is “What’s that around your pool?”.

We usually respond by saying that is part of our favorite room in the house, the LANAI.

Most of us were introduced to the word lanai while watching the classic tv show “Golden Girls” back in the mid-80s. However, even though Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia spent many an episodes saying their were going out on their lanai, many people however outside of Florida do not what they were talking ab out.

So what is a Lanai?   In definition it’s a porch or veranda.

In Florida, a lanai is considered to be any covered area outside of the house, typically screened in, that is used as a living space. Most lanais are furnished.  Some will simply have chairs and chaise lounges, others will have dining tables, televisions, and more.

You will also find that most swimming pools are contained within the lanai, along with additional pool type furnishings and toys. The screen enclosure is referred to as the pool cage.  Another benefit of this enclosure is it keeps debris and critters out, and well it keeps our dogs in!  By the way, we’ve also learned that our lanai is a great place to view rocket launches as well.

A must have in your lanai is a ceiling fan.  This will make sitting outside comfortable, even on hot days. We use our lanai just about every day.  Our lanai is truly our favorite room in our home.

Our mornings begin with a cup of coffee on the lanai. On weekends you will find us taking an afternoon nap in the chaise lounge on the lanai and many evenings we will dine on our outdoor dining table on the lanai.

And let’s not forget that caged pool.  Well we can enjoy that all year long!
